Everyone can make a change

The driving question for this whole project or PBL would be as a xaverian how can I contribute in making San Juan city a safe, sustainable, and strong city? Truthfully I was absent the whole first week of school and therefore skipped the orientations about what the PBL is about and so the first time I heard this driving question I was unsure and confused, was San Juan not a safe, sustainable, and strong city already? What were the problems? And what exactly is this PBL focusing on its driving question about? I was clueless on what was happening at that time, although eventually I started to understand that I, someone who spends almost everyday in the city and who has the opportunity, to contribute in making a better change for San Juan.

The preparation for the PBL task consist of research, studying on how to collect data, brainstorming on ideas, etc. We can measure the SSS of a place by integrating what we have learned in the different subjects, for example the data needed to be gathered during my stay in the Barangay were the current state of the barangay, what projects do they have for the safety and cleaniness of the area, temperature, interviewing citizens, biodiversity and so on. Some questions to the barangay chairman that helped were what their current projects are and if there were any future projects in mind addressing the three S’s. At first as I said I was clueless but when understanding it, this project seemingly attaches to me on a personal level and this is because of being able to find God in all things, to be honest I’m someone who usually doesn’t think about the good things that I receive but rather focus on all the negativity but in our lesson on deepening are knowledge on finding God in all things there was one that really struck me which was to be thankful of all our daily blessings and that each is by God, there are so many other people out there who don’t have a decent livelihood with no education and I have been given those and yet I take them for granted but this PBL project is an opportunity for me to show my gratitude by helping the community. When the task were given, the two most dominant feelings are worry and anxiety and this is because of mainly two things: first, I can be defined as a worrywart. Second, being overwhelmed with assessments, catching up, and what exactly would be happening on the PBL day.

I was assigned to little Baguio and although in had few observations as this was my longest walk due to my injury some observations were that it wasn’t traffic but there were many vehicles on the road, lots of trash scattered around, many residential buildings, and few trees from where we were in the barangay. The goods that made the present condition of the barangay would be the citizens, the barangay officials, the green spaces, and others. These affected the present condition by how these are what make up the community of the barangay and therefore decide on how the barangay’s condition would be, except for the green spaces but they contribute by making the environment cleaner. The barangay officials contribute by doing their job which is to ensure the safety of the people in and the barangay itself while the citizens are the majority and decide mainly on the current state with their actions. For me I think that the current state of the barangay isn’t a prudent decision from the members of the barangay since it doesn’t follow some of the eight components of prudence like insights and docility, while there are projects by the local government in which address the other components of prudence the citizens aren’t practicing insight and docility, they are who are responsible for the future of the community as they make up the majority, there are lots of trash around and show how the weighing of advantages and disadvantages isn’t present, their environment is at stake here yet they don’t act, docility isn’t practice because of how the community is seemingly not cooperating with each other in some areas. The main concern of the barangay would be the trash and the energy source and this mainly hinders the sustainability by polluting the environment even more and the fact that their only source of energy in the area would be meralco that isn’t even a renewable energy source. I can contribute in the driving question my acting my environmental campaign proposal. While doing this task I mainly felt confident but at the same time worried and this because I felt that I was doing things right in terms of getting results and that I can make a positive change in doing this project but worried as I felt that I forgot something in data or strayed away too much on the driving question. Our lessons in class were definitely helpful in doing the task since first of all the eight components of prudence for me is truly needed to be used for the whole duration of the project, its sensible and logical even without the integration of CLE with it while discernment in really choosing and understanding what the most important problem that must be addressed and the best solution for it.

I do feel that the solutions that me and my groupmates provided an be applied in real-life situations today as these problems aren’t only found in San Juan City but also in other areas in the Philippines like trash being scattered around on the sidewalks in almost every busy road in the country. Our proposals will affect their lives in a good way, at first it may seem hard for them to do as it isn’t part of their daily lives before but later on it won’t bother them and will also improve the environment.

Some of the most interesting discoveries I had in this project would be as a student I can still make significant changes to help in a community, even if they are in the same city the different barangays can have their own unique problems that in the other might have been resolved already, and if we are being prudent that its still depends on the people. I was able to help others by using capabilities that I never knew I had by finding new ways in which I can be of use, at first I thought that my injury was going to slow us down as I can’t do the field work but by finding a new way to help by studying the processes I instead was able be a useful member. The challenging moments would be the data gathering and the website, due to how it was very hard to find an area with abundant no. of species while the website due to sometimes my members would not cooperate on the contrary some of my powerful learning moments is to not doubt yourself too much and to step up and go out of your comfort zone often to improve yourself and gain more experiences.
